The Teaching Service Commission (TSC) has initiated the advertisement of teaching positions as it seeks to fill 2,800 vacancies for senior teachers within the Education Sector. This announcement was made by Minister of Governance Gail Teixeira during the consideration of the Budget Estimates on Monday.

The budget allocates over $205 million for the recurring expenses of the Teaching Service Commission, along with an additional $15 million designated for works. Teixeira informed the Committee that, as of February 1, 2026, the Commission began advertising these senior teacher vacancies in two local newspapers. Available positions include head teachers for nursery, primary, and secondary levels.
Opposition MP Tabitha Sarabo-Halley from the WIN party questioned the status of vacancies for junior teaching positions. In response, Minister Teixeira indicated that the Commission is awaiting guidance from the Ministry of Education regarding the specific needs at different educational levels. She explained, “The Ministry of Education advises the Teaching Service Commission on how many teachers they would need at different levels. With new schools opening—new primary schools, new secondary schools—they will need to indicate how many more teachers are required.”
Teixeira also noted that a significant number of teachers will graduate from the Cyril Potter College of Education later this year, which will help fill vacancies for junior positions as they enter the teaching profession.
Concern was raised by A Partnership for National Unity (APNU) MP Ganesh Mahipaul regarding the poor condition of the Commission’s building. He pointed out that $15.4 million was budgeted for its maintenance in 2025, with an additional $11 million allocated for 2026. He requested details on the maintenance work being undertaken.
Minister Teixeira acknowledged the building’s age and the need for repairs. She outlined some of the maintenance projects planned for this year, including:
- $2.2 million for reconfiguration of the third-floor boardroom
- $3 million for renovating storerooms and painting the second floor
Other planned works include painting various sections of the Commission’s building, including the fence. This ongoing maintenance is part of the government’s commitment to ensuring a conducive environment for educational governance.
