The body of 22-year-old Ravindra Bissoondyal, also known as “Videsh,” has been recovered following the sinking of a molasses barge in the Atlantic Ocean. His body was found near a sea buoy off the Demerara River. Bissoondyal was a resident of Goed Bananen Land, Canje, Berbice.
The search continues for the other crew member, 52-year-old Gregory Singh, known as “Greg,” who remains unaccounted for after the incident.
According to the Maritime Administration Department (MARAD), the barge sank approximately 9.5 nautical miles off Buxton, East Coast Demerara, on Monday while transporting molasses from Berbice to Georgetown.
Authorities are working diligently to locate Singh and are investigating the circumstances surrounding the vessel’s sinking. The maritime community is mourning the loss of Bissoondyal, while friends and family of both crew members hold out hope for Singh’s safe return.
