The Guyana Fire Service has issued a public warning against the use of non-approved containers for fuel storage, cautioning that the practice poses a significant fire and explosion hazard.

The warning comes a day after scores of persons were seen at gas stations using plastic bottles and other unsuitable vessels to purchase fuel amid shortages at some stations.

In a statement, the Fire Service said improper containers such as drink bottles, water jars, and glass containers can easily rupture, leak, and ignite, leading to devastating consequences including extensive property damage, serious injuries, or loss of life.

The agency said that in accordance with National Fire Protection Association standards, fuel must only be stored in approved metal safety cans with flame arresters, certified plastic fuel containers designed specifically for petroleum storage, or containers that are clearly labelled, leak-proof, and fitted with secure caps.

The Fire Service also advised households to store no more than five gallons — approximately 20 litres — of fuel for domestic use, unless permission is granted by the agency to store larger quantities. Persons wishing to store fuel in excess of the recommended amount are urged to apply in writing to the Fire Prevention Department, providing details on the quantity and type of fuel, the storage location, and safety measures in place.

The public is also being urged to keep fuel out of reach of children and unauthorised persons and to have a fire extinguisher readily available at all times.
