A 26-year-old Venezuelan national has been sentenced to 18 months in prison after pleading guilty to charges of unlawful possession of a firearm.

Luis Eduardo Lepaje Chacon, a laborer residing in Prospect, East Bank Demerara, appeared before Magistrate Dylon Bess at the Diamond Magistrate’s Court on Monday, June 15, 2026.
During the hearing, the charge of Unlawful Possession of a Firearm Without a Licence—contrary to Section 16(2)(a) of the Firearms Act, Chapter 16:05—was read to the defendant. To ensure full understanding of the proceedings, the charge was read in English and translated into Spanish for Chacon. He entered a plea of guilty to the charge.
Following the guilty plea, Magistrate Bess sentenced Chacon to one year and six months’ imprisonment. Chacon had been in police custody since his arrest on Thursday, June 11, 2026.
