On the evening of February 4, 2026, four men were discovered deceased in the engine room of a cargo ship. Preliminary police reports suggest the men were inspecting a dry space in the vessel’s engine room when they were overcome by suspected noxious fumes.

The tragedy unfolded in a series of failed rescue attempts:

Brandon Deonarine (18) and Nerwaine Persaud (57) initially entered the room and collapsed.

Dominic Alexis (33) attempted to assist his colleagues but also collapsed.

Getindra Sanchara (25) entered last in a final attempt to render aid and similarly succumbed.

Emergency responders, including the Guyana Fire Service and medical teams, were called to the scene, but all four victims were pronounced dead.

Minister of Labour Keoma Griffith confirmed to News Source that the Labour Department’s investigation is still active. According to the Minister, authorities are currently awaiting the results of a forensic analysis conducted at the scene. While carbon monoxide poisoning is suspected, official confirmation remains pending.

Grieving families have become increasingly vocal about the lack of updates from officials. Veanjeie Persaud, daughter of the late Nerwaine Persaud, expressed the collective anguish of the affected families in a recent social media statement, noting that the ongoing silence has exacerbated their pain.

“While we understand that investigations can be lengthy and complex, four months is a significant amount of time for families to be left in uncertainty,” Persaud stated. She highlighted that families have yet to receive toxicology results or any substantial report on the progress of the inquiry. She emphasized that the families deserve transparency, communication, and clear timelines regarding when they might receive answers.

As of June 17, 2026, the investigation continues, leaving the families to wait for definitive information regarding the circumstances that led to the loss of their loved ones.
