A joint services operation by the Guyana Police Force and the Guyana Defence Force has resulted in the arrest and prosecution of 40 individuals following a crackdown on illegal mining activities within the Iwokrama Protected Area.

During their appearance before Magistrate Clive Nurse on Tuesday, June 16, 2026, the defendants faced charges related to their presence and activities within the protected reserve.
Venezuelan Nationals: Several individuals who had entered the country illegally pleaded guilty to the charge of illegal entry. They were ordered to be deported and fined G$50,000 each. Additionally, those among this group charged with illegal mining also pleaded guilty and were fined an additional G$25,000 each.
Guyanese Nationals: Several Guyanese citizens were among the 40 people charged for participating in illegal mining within the reserve. All pleaded guilty and were subsequently fined.
The group of 40 defendants included at least four women. The arrests took place between June 13 and June 14, 2026.
The operation marks a significant response to ongoing concerns regarding the integrity of the Iwokrama Forest. The Iwokrama management has repeatedly reported that illegal mining activities continue to pose a threat to the reserve’s conservation status.
The Guyana Police Force and Guyana Defence Force have intensified their presence in the interior regions recently, citing a reported upsurge in illegal mining. Authorities have stated that these operations are aimed at curbing environmental damage and ensuring that mining activities are conducted strictly within legal and regulated frameworks.
