First Lady Arya Ali Advocates for Persons with Disabilities at UN Conference

First Lady Mrs. Arya Ali addressed a United Nations gathering on Tuesday, emphasizing Guyana’s strong support for persons with disabilities during the 18th session of the Conference of States Parties to the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities.

In her statement, Mrs. Ali detailed the legislative and institutional measures implemented in Guyana to support this vulnerable group. She highlighted the Prevention of Discrimination Act and the Persons with Disabilities Act, which establish a legal framework to prohibit discrimination in employment, mandate rehabilitation services, ensure access to free education and healthcare, and promote participation in cultural and recreational activities.

Mrs. Ali emphasized the role of the National Commission on Disability, which is dedicated to promoting and protecting the rights of persons with disabilities in Guyana.

Beyond legislation, she shared that the government is committed to providing practical support, including lifelong public assistance, employment opportunities, housing options, and assistive devices.

“We recently launched the Center for Equity, Opportunity and Innovation, which currently employs numerous persons with disabilities and offers technical, vocational, and business development training,” Mrs. Ali stated.

She also pointed out the collaborative efforts of various organizations, including the Mahaica Learning Lab, the Board of Industrial Training, the Business Center, and the Open Doors Vocational Centre, all of which provide free skills training for persons with disabilities.

Additionally, Mrs. Ali noted that Guyana is home to the Regional Disability Diagnostic and Treatment Centre, which focuses on early diagnosis and intervention for children with disabilities.

Through these initiatives, Mrs. Ali underscored Guyana’s commitment to fostering an inclusive society where persons with disabilities can thrive and fully participate in all aspects of life.
