Woman Escapes Abusive Relationship, Seeks Help for Her Family

  • News

Joanna Ramoutar, a mother of two, has come forward with a harrowing account of her six-year ordeal in an abusive relationship with Karran Sukhan, the owner of Red Scorpion Car Rental. After enduring years of violence and control, Ramoutar managed to escape with her children, but now fears for their safety.

In October 2018, Ramoutar began her relationship with Sukhan, but by March 2019, the abuse began. Initially physical, the violence quickly escalated to life-threatening attacks. “He kicked me in the stomach, stomped on my head, and beat me repeatedly,” Ramoutar recounted. The situation reached a breaking point last Friday when she expressed her desire to leave, prompting Sukhan to attack her with a knife and cutlass.

Ramoutar’s injuries are a testament to the brutality she faced—her body is now covered in scars and bruises. She also revealed that Sukhan threatened their two-year-old son, saying he would poison and kill them all. “His own grandmother witnessed the abuse, yet he dismissed her concerns, saying, ‘She’s my wife. I can do whatever I want to her,’” she explained.

Beyond physical abuse, Ramoutar described severe emotional and mental torment. “I lived like a slave,” she said, detailing how she was forced to perform demeaning tasks or face punishment.

Despite finally filing a police report five days ago, Ramoutar feels abandoned by the authorities. “He is currently hiding, and I live in constant fear,” she stated. An officer from the New Amsterdam Police Station reportedly told her she must have “enjoyed the licks” since she stayed in the relationship for so long.

Now, Ramoutar is pleading for help. “I wasn’t just abused – I was tortured, controlled, and dehumanized. I fear for my life and for the lives of my two innocent children,” she said, urging the community and authorities to take action.

As she begins to rebuild her life, Ramoutar hopes to raise awareness about domestic violence and encourage others in similar situations to seek help. Her story is a stark reminder of the urgent need for better support systems for victims of abuse.
