Years after his diagnosis, a mother is appealing for assistance for her only child, Kanhai Ramnarine, who urgently needs a kidney transplant due to end-stage renal failure.

Ramnarine, 19, was diagnosed in 2018 after falling ill while awaiting his Common Entrance exam results. His mother, Yashoda Persaud, recounted the sudden onset of his symptoms.
“Just like that, one day he had everything—fever, cold, vomiting, diarrhea, weakness, shivering,” Persaud recalled.
Ramnarine was initially taken to Suddie Hospital and later transferred to Georgetown Public Hospital, where tests confirmed his condition. Doctors advised that he needed emergency dialysis or a transplant. Since then, his treatment has begun, but his health has deteriorated, requiring three dialysis sessions each week.
This situation has placed a significant financial burden on the family. Persaud noted that while the government provided $600,000 for his treatment, those funds have now been exhausted.
To manage costs, the family has relocated multiple times, but Ramnarine’s condition continues to present challenges. “We’ve moved so many places… because of the dialysis, he has developed additional issues, including seizures during treatment. He can’t use public transportation, so I have to take a taxi for his appointments,” Persaud explained.
Despite earning a spot at Anna Regina Multilateral School, Ramnarine only attended for three weeks before his health forced him to stop. “He didn’t even have the strength to go. He spends most of his time at home, trying to play games on his phone and sleeping. He can’t walk long distances,” she said.
Persaud emphasized that the only alternative now is a transplant. “We need a donor or any assistance we can get—every little bit helps, even prayers,” she urged.
Individuals willing to contribute to Ramnarine’s medical expenses can contact Yashoda Persaud at 680-2147 or 646-5107.
