Heartbreaking Loss: Shinnell Williams Succumbs to Liver Cirrhosis

In a tragic turn of events, Shinnell Williams has passed away on June 14th due to complications from liver cirrhosis, a condition she battled since her diagnosis in May 2023. Her sister, Sheniza Sampson, had shared the emotional toll this illness has taken on their family, highlighting the challenges faced in accessing timely medical care.

Shinnell was initially hospitalized for ten days before being discharged with instructions to join a gastroenterology clinic. Unfortunately, due to the clinic’s full capacity, she was unable to enroll for an entire year. During this time, her health significantly deteriorated, requiring frequent hospital visits.

After finally joining the clinic, tests revealed her liver was failing, necessitating a transplant. However, such procedures are not available in Guyana, leaving the family to grapple with the overwhelming costs of seeking treatment abroad. Despite Sheniza’s efforts to secure government assistance, they have received no response regarding potential coverage.

The family’s frustration only grew as they encountered barriers in obtaining urgent medical information. Sheniza recounted her mother’s experience at the hospital, where she was told to see a doctor at the clinic, only to find that the doctor was on leave. This lack of communication exacerbated Shinnell’s declining health.

In May, Shinnell suffered seizures and lost consciousness, leading to her return to the emergency room, where she ultimately fell into a coma. The family, devastated by the situation, faced the harsh reality that medical professionals had little more to offer.

Living in Plaisance with her husband and two young sons, aged 7 and 4, Shinnell’s illness has left her family grappling with not only her health crisis but also the emotional impact on her children, who now face an uncertain future without their mother.

Sheniza emphasized the urgent need for a support system within public healthcare, suggesting that platforms like GoFundMe could provide critical assistance for families facing costly medical challenges. “It’s very sad that my sister is in this position,” she lamented, clarifying that Shinnell’s condition was not due to alcoholism but rather attributed to past health issues.
