Motorcyclist Charged in Connection with Fatal Accident

Location: Albion Magistrate’s Court, Corentyne Berbice

A 23-year-old motorcyclist, Kenwin Collins, has been charged in connection with a tragic accident that resulted in the death of 80-year-old Menawatty Harilall. The charges were presented in court on Tuesday before Magistrate Michelle Matthias at the Albion Magistrate’s Court.

Collins faces charges of causing death by dangerous driving, as well as riding a motorcycle without a safety helmet and carrying a passenger without proper headgear. While he pleaded not guilty to the charge of causing death, he admitted guilt to the two helmet-related offenses.

His attorney, Everton Singh-Lammy, informed the court that a settlement had been reached between Collins and Harilall’s family to resolve the matter amicably without further prosecution.

The police prosecutor, Meika Crawford, did not oppose bail, noting that the case file would be submitted to the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) for further legal guidance. Taking into account Collins’s financial situation, Magistrate Matthias granted him self-bail, emphasizing the importance of his return to court for the proceedings.

Collins is scheduled to make his next court appearance on July 29.

The incident occurred on March 26, 2025, around 8:30 a.m. Reports indicate that Menawatty had left her home after completing her prayers and was on her way to dispose of flowers in a nearby trench when the accident happened.

CCTV footage reviewed by news sources shows Menawatty attempting to cross the road when she was struck by Collins’s motorcycle (CG 979), causing her to fall onto the roadway. Villagers quickly responded to the scene, and although Collins rendered assistance, Menawatty was pronounced dead upon arrival at the Port Mourant Public Hospital.

Following the incident, Collins was arrested and questioned, and he was subsequently informed that charges would be filed against him.
