APNU Leader Aubrey Norton Addresses Concerns Over New Political Party

Aubrey Norton, the Presidential Candidate for the APNU and Leader of the PNC/R, expressed skepticism regarding claims that the newly formed We Invest in Nationhood (W.I.N) party could pose a threat to the APNU and its support base. During a press conference this morning, Norton acknowledged the entrance of businessman Azruddin Mohamed into the electoral process but maintained confidence in the APNU’s established support.

Key Points from Norton’s Statement:

Support Base Resilience: Norton emphasized that Guyanese voters tend to support parties rather than individuals, suggesting that the APNU’s loyal base will remain steadfast.

Historical Context: He referenced past local government elections, where voters accepted incentives from the PPP but ultimately supported the APNU, indicating a trend he expects to see repeated.

Response to W.I.N’s Campaign: While acknowledging W.I.N’s outreach, Norton stated, “We are not worried about that; we know how to do our political work and we will do our political work.”

Ganesh Mahipaul, an Executive Member of the PNC/R and APNU candidate, further analyzed W.I.N’s candidate list, suggesting that many candidates hail from constituencies traditionally won by the PPP/C. He highlighted that the APNU remains unfazed by W.I.N’s campaign efforts.

Mahipaul noted, “We have seen how these small parties operate… Everyone of them, in their aftermath of securing votes, end up being in bed with the People’s Progressive Party.”

Both leaders conveyed a unified front, assuring their supporters that the APNU remains committed to its political strategy and is not concerned about the competition posed by W.I.N.
