Minister Robeson Benn Calls for Systemic Reforms in Policing

  • News

Minister of Home Affairs, Robeson Benn, has condemned the disrespect faced by police officers while performing their duties and has called for systemic reforms within the Guyana Police Force. His remarks were made during the National Road Safety Stakeholder Forum on Tuesday.

Minister Benn expressed his frustration over the daily insults and disrespect that police officers endure. “While driving to work, I get upset when I see how disrespected the police are. There may be failings by the police now and again, but it is a difficult job getting insults every day from people using the road,” he stated.

He highlighted the troubling practice of individuals attempting to bribe officers or contacting high-ranking officials to evade penalties. “When people think the police will do them something, they may want to offer a bribe or call someone they know,” he said, emphasizing that officers should issue tickets without hesitation. His comments received applause from the audience.

To enhance accountability and reduce confrontations, Minister Benn proposed a system that allows offenders to be ticketed without needing to visit police stations. This initiative aims to streamline the process and minimize direct interactions that may lead to conflicts.

Benn stressed the need to make police stations more humane and welcoming, particularly for individuals in distress. He recounted a disturbing visit to the Beterverwagting (BV) Police Station, where he found four young women lying on the concrete floor at 3:00 AM. “We cannot have that; it is disrespectful to them, to us, and to the wider society,” he lamented. He further suggested that even lockups should have beds and pillows for detainees.

The Minister assured that efforts are underway to enhance facilities and accountability within the police force. This includes the implementation of body cameras and video surveillance in police stations to ensure transparency and improve interactions between officers and the public.

As the push for reform continues, Minister Benn’s call highlights the urgent need for a more respectful and accountable policing system that prioritizes the dignity of both officers and the community they serve.
