$864.7 Million Tuschen Secondary School Commissioned

  • News

The Government of Guyana has officially commissioned the new state-of-the-art Tuschen Secondary School, a facility that President Irfaan Ali has described as “second to none.” The commissioning took place on August 20, 2025, marking a significant investment of $864.7 million in education.

During the ceremony, President Ali emphasized that the new school can rival any educational institution in Latin America and the Caribbean. He stated, “This school is not just another building; it lays the foundation for a new Guyana, where every person, irrespective of their geographic location, must have access to a high level of education.”

The President highlighted the importance of education in maximizing the country’s natural resources. “What sense would it make to have all of the natural resources but not have the scientists, engineers, and economists to multiply this value?” he questioned. He reiterated that the development of young minds is crucial for the future of the nation.

The Tuschen Secondary School is one of five secondary schools being constructed in the region and is designed to accommodate approximately 800 students. The facility features 24 classrooms, laboratories, a Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) center, a canteen, a multi-purpose hall, a cafeteria, a sanitary block, and outdoor recreational spaces.

Education Minister Priya Manickchand joined the President at the event, stating that the new school is part of the government’s commitment to ensuring universal access to secondary education. “In three and a half years, we have built 67 nursery schools, 45 primary schools, and 42 secondary schools,” she announced, adding that by September 2026, children across the country will have the opportunity to attend high school close to their homes.

The commissioning of the Tuschen Secondary School reflects the government’s ongoing efforts to enhance the educational infrastructure and provide quality education for all Guyanese students.
