FGM Files High Court Challenge Over Ballot Exclusions

  • News

The Forward Guyana Movement (FGM) has filed a legal challenge in the High Court against the Guyana Elections Commission (GECOM) for excluding approved political parties from ballots in several regions.

The application seeks constitutional relief, arguing that GECOM’s practices violate Articles 59, 149, and 160 of the Constitution and the Representation of the People Act. It highlights that FGM and the Assembly of Liberty and Prosperity (ALP) were omitted from ballots in Regions 7, 8, and 9, with the ALP also excluded from Regions 1 and 2.

The affidavit claims this exclusion denies voters their rights and disproportionately affects Indigenous communities, amounting to discrimination. It also distorts proportional representation in the National Assembly.

Plaintiff Krystal Hadassah Fisher argues that GECOM’s actions are unconstitutional and silencing. The motion seeks to declare elections without full party inclusion null and void, restrain GECOM from such exclusions, and ensure that all voters can participate fully.

FGM is committed to ensuring fair and inclusive elections, asserting that democracy is weakened when voters lack access to all options. This challenge is about fairness and dignity for all Guyanese.
