Region Two to Establish College of Medical Sciences, President Ali Announces

  • News

In a significant development for healthcare education in Guyana, President Dr. Irfaan Ali announced that Region Two will host a branch of the University of Guyana’s College of Medical Sciences. This initiative aims to make medical courses more accessible to students in the region.

The announcement was made during the commissioning of the Lima Regional Hospital on August 22, 2025. President Ali revealed that he has instructed both the Minister of Health and the Minister of Education to establish several medical colleges affiliated with the University of Guyana across various regions, including Region Two.

“We are building a new school that will have enough capacity. In the evenings, it will operate as the Guyana Medical College Essequibo Branch, where nurses, physicians, dentists, and technicians will be trained right here in Essequibo,” President Ali stated.

The move comes in response to the overwhelming number of applications received by the university for medical programs, including pharmacy, dental technician, dentistry, nursing, biology, and medical sciences. Currently, the university is unable to accommodate all applicants, leading to disappointment among many aspiring students.

“With this new facility, medical students will no longer have to travel as far as Turkeyen to pursue their studies,” the president added, emphasizing the importance of local education in fostering future healthcare professionals.

This initiative is expected to enhance the training of healthcare workers in Region Two, ultimately improving healthcare services in the area. The establishment of the medical college is seen as a crucial step toward addressing the healthcare needs of the region and providing more opportunities for local students.
