Eleven Region One Motorists Fined for DUI; One Charged for Refusing Breathalyzer Test

Eleven motorists from Region One (Barima-Waini) have been charged with driving while their breath alcohol level exceeded the prescribed limit, with fines handed down across three days of hearings at the Mabaruma and Port Kaituma Magistrates’ Courts. A twelfth individual was separately charged for refusing to consent to a breathalyzer test.

All defendants were charged under Section 39A(1) of the Motor Vehicles and Road Traffic Act, Chapter 51:02, and all pleaded guilty to their respective charges.

At the Mabaruma Magistrate’s Court on Monday, April 13, 2026, four motorists — Daren Cozier of Kamwatta Village, Marc Marcus of Mabaruma Settlement, Ronaldo Williams of Barbina Village and Adrian Alberts of Sugar Hill, Mabaruma — were each fined $200,000 GYD.

Two additional defendants appeared before the Mabaruma Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday, April 14, 2026. Kennard Smith of Khan Hill, Mabaruma and Damian Williams of Wauna Village were each handed fines of $200,000 GYD.

On Wednesday, April 15, 2026, proceedings continued at both courts. At Mabaruma, William Duke of Kumaka Waterfront and Joshua Thomas of Thomas Hill, Mabaruma were each fined $200,000 GYD. At the Port Kaituma Magistrate’s Court on the same date, Devon Chacon of Train Line, Port Kaituma and Leon Mendonca of Oronoque, Port Kaituma were each fined $100,000 GYD.

Also at the Port Kaituma Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday, Orson Speede was charged with refusal to consent to a breathalyzer test. He pleaded guilty and was fined $30,000 GYD.

The Guyana Police Force said the charges form part of its ongoing traffic enforcement efforts in Regional Division #1, aimed at reducing impaired driving and promoting safer roadways across the region.
