The High Court has ordered a full trial for Brian Richards, the man accused of the May 2023 murder of school principal Kirwyn “Sir” Mars, after Richards retracted his guilty plea during his sentencing hearing today.

Richards had entered a guilty plea to the murder charge last month. However, when he appeared in court this morning for sentencing, he indicated to the presiding judge, Justice Joy Persaud-Singh, that he did not fully understand the legal consequences of that plea. While he clarified that he had not been coerced into pleading guilty, he expressed a desire to maintain his innocence and proceed to trial. Consequently, Justice Persaud-Singh ordered that the case move to a full trial.
The murder of Kirwyn Mars, a well-known and respected educator, occurred in May 2023. According to reports from the initial committal hearing held in June 2025 before Magistrate Sunil Scarce, the victim was stabbed eight times—including wounds to his chest, shoulder, collarbone, and limbs—before being fatally run over by his own vehicle as he attempted to escape.
A post-mortem examination concluded that the principal died from crushing injuries to his chest, compounded by the multiple stab wounds. Investigators were able to link Richards to the crime through surveillance footage, which captured him leaving a bar in the company of the victim just hours before the attack.
The case, which had been set for sentencing, will now proceed to the High Court for a full trial to determine the defendant’s guilt or innocence.
