Be! Payment, which described itself as a licensed payment service provider, launched in February 2025 and quickly expanded across the country, setting up dozens of automated teller machines (ATMs) that allowed holders of a specially-issued card to conveniently access cash. The platform attracted a significant number of customers who deposited funds through the service.

However, customers are now reporting that they can no longer access their money, and attempts to contact the company or its representatives have been unsuccessful.

Regulatory authorities are urging affected persons to file official reports with the Guyana Police Force or seek legal representation as a first step toward recovering their funds. This publication reached out to Bank of Guyana Governor Dr. Gobind Ganga, who is currently overseas on official business, but did not receive a response.

Amid the uncertainty, Demerara Bank Limited has moved swiftly to distance itself from the controversy. In a notice issued on Wednesday, the bank clarified that it has no obligation to issue refunds on behalf of Caripay Inc. and that its relationship with the company was formally terminated in January 2026.

“Demerara Bank Limited is not issuing any refunds on behalf of, or in connection with, Caripay Inc., and has received no instructions or directives from Caripay Inc. or any regulatory authority to do so,” the bank stated, adding that its former relationship with Caripay was strictly between the two entities and did not extend to customers or users of the platform.

The bank advised affected persons to contact Caripay Inc. directly.
