Alexei Anthony De Lima, 27, of Covent Garden, East Bank Demerara, appeared before Magistrate Michelle Matthias at the Albion Magistrates’ Court, where he was charged with causing death by dangerous driving and operating an uninsured motor vehicle. He did not enter a plea to either charge.

The court was informed that on Sunday, April 12, 2026, De Lima was operating motor lorry GVV 5043 on the Williamsburg Public Road when he turned into the path of an oncoming motorcycle ridden by Gopilall, resulting in a fatal collision. Pillion rider Yedesh Singh, 27, of Fyrish Village, sustained a fractured jaw and clavicle and remains hospitalised at the New Amsterdam Public Hospital.

Prosecutor Police Corporal Leon Jones objected to bail, citing the seriousness of the offence and the fact that one person had died while another remained hospitalised. Defence attorney Mohamed Ali submitted a bail application, arguing that his client was not a flight risk and would cooperate with proceedings if granted reasonable bail. Magistrate Matthias denied bail and remanded De Lima to prison. The matter was adjourned to May 19 for further proceedings.

A postmortem examination conducted on Monday confirmed that Gopilall died from multiple injuries consistent with a motor vehicle crash. A breathalyser test administered to De Lima at the scene recorded readings of 31 and 32 micrograms.
