During his address at the Enmore Martyrs Day commemoration on Tuesday, June 16, 2026, President Dr. Mohamed Irfaan Ali reaffirmed his administration’s goal to increase the personal income tax threshold to G$200,000 before the end of his current term.

The President emphasized the government’s consistent track record of reducing the tax burden on Guyanese workers since taking office in 2020. At that time, the tax-free threshold stood at G$65,000. Under the current administration, it has seen steady, incremental growth:
2020: G$65,000
2022: G$75,000
2023: G$85,000
2024: G$100,000
2025: G$130,000
2026 (Current): G$140,000
Each successive adjustment has successfully removed thousands of low-income earners from the tax net. The most recent increase to G$140,000 alone exempted approximately 5,000 workers from income tax and injected more than G$2 billion in additional disposable income into the economy.
President Ali framed these tax reforms as part of a broader socio-economic strategy aimed at moving workers toward higher living standards.
“Our level for the workers is not a hundred thousand,” the President stated. “Our level is to move them from one status to the next status, so that their children can enjoy a different level upon which they start their base.”
He asserted that his administration has consistently delivered on key economic pledges, including raising thresholds, increasing public sector salaries, and improving pension benefits. The commitment to reach the G$200,000 threshold represents the next major milestone in the government’s plan to increase the financial mobility of the national workforce.
