A community is in mourning after a six-year-old boy, Kayden Busey, lost his life in a drowning accident in the backlands of Edinburgh, East Bank Berbice, on the afternoon of Sunday, June 21, 2026.

Kayden, a resident of 1230 Glasgow Housing Scheme and a Grade One pupil at All Saints Primary School in New Amsterdam, had left his home alongside his four-year-old and eight-year-old brothers. According to his mother, Gaynor Paul, the children accompanied two older girls, aged 12 and 13, to swim in a nearby trench. Witnesses reported that as the girls played in the water, Kayden jumped into the trench and suddenly disappeared beneath the surface. His eight-year-old brother attempted to rescue him but was unable to reach him.
The mother was alerted to the crisis by a relative and rushed to the location to join residents and family members in a search. Kayden’s body was recovered by a relative shortly after 15:00 hours. Despite his mother’s desperate attempts to resuscitate him and his subsequent transfer to the New Amsterdam Hospital, he was pronounced dead upon arrival.
Gaynor Paul, devastated by the loss, remembered her son as a vibrant and affectionate child. “He was so loving. He like to talk a lot. My heart piece gone,” she said. The Guyana Police Force has launched an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the drowning.
