A 31-year-old motorcyclist lost his life on Sunday evening after a collision with a motor lorry along the Williamsburg Public Road, with the lorry driver now in custody as investigations continue.

Dead is Haresh Gopilall of Lot 25 ‘D’ Williamsburg Village, Corentyne, Berbice.
The accident occurred at approximately 21:00 hours and involved motor lorry GVV 5043, owned by a Timehri-based engineering company and driven by a 27-year-old man of Covent Garden, East Bank Demerara. According to police, the lorry was proceeding east along the northern drive lane at a normal rate of speed when Gopilall, riding motorcycle CR 1603 with pillion rider Yedesh Singh, 27, of Fyrish Village, attempted to overtake. At that moment, the lorry driver made a sudden right turn into the motorcycle’s path, resulting in a collision in the southern drive lane.
Both Gopilall and Singh were thrown from the motorcycle and sustained injuries. Public-spirited citizens assisted them and transported them to the Port Mourant Public Hospital, where Gopilall was pronounced dead on arrival. His body has since been taken to the Ramoo Funeral Home awaiting a post-mortem examination.
Singh was treated at Port Mourant before being transferred to the New Amsterdam Public Hospital, where he was admitted with fractures to his left jaw and clavicle. His condition is listed as stable.
The lorry driver was subjected to two breathalyser tests, which recorded readings of 31 and 32 micrograms of alcohol per breath. He remains in custody as investigations continue. Both vehicles have been lodged at the Rose Hall Town Police Station pending examination.
