Detective Sergeant Placed Under Close Arrest After Shooting at Chanta Creek

A Detective Sergeant has been placed under close arrest following a shooting incident at Chanta Creek along the Soesdyke-Linden Highway on Sunday, police have confirmed.

The incident occurred at approximately 17:00 hrs.

According to preliminary investigations, the officer was at the creek with family members when he reportedly became involved in a misunderstanding with several men. Police said the situation escalated, and the officer was allegedly attacked with a cutlass.

Further investigations indicate that the rank discharged a round from his service-issued 9mm pistol in the direction of the men.

During the incident, a 37-year-old gold miner of Yarrowkabra Creek sustained a suspected gunshot injury to his right leg. He was assisted by relatives and police and taken to the McKenzie Hospital, where he is currently receiving treatment. His condition has been listed as stable.

The officer has since been placed under close arrest as investigations continue.
