Police Investigate Separate Firearm Incidents in Regions Nine and Four ‘C’

Authorities are investigating two firearm-related incidents that occurred on Monday night in Regions Nine and Four ‘C’, leading to the recovery of illegal weapons and the arrest of two individuals.

The first incident unfolded around 19:05 hrs in Hiawa Village, Central Rupununi, where police officers from Regional Division #9 responded to a report of threatening behavior. While on patrol, law enforcement was alerted to a gunshot allegedly fired in the community.

Upon their arrival, a 53-year-old male member of the Community Policing Group (CPG) presented police with a white rice bag containing a 20-gauge shotgun, two cartridges, and one empty shell casing. The ranks secured the firearm and ammunition for evidence.

Further inquiries led police to a 31-year-old male teacher from Hiawa Village. During questioning, he reportedly confessed that he did not possess a firearm license. He was subsequently arrested and taken to the Lethem Police Station, where the recovered firearm and ammunition were lodged as investigations continued.

Less than an hour later, at approximately 21:00 hrs, police in Regional Division #4 ‘C’ responded to reports of gunshots along Oil Mill Road, Cove and John, East Coast Demerara. Upon arrival, officers observed a group of men congregated at a nearby residence.

While conducting their enquiries, police noticed one male behaving suspiciously and placing an object among the plants in a yard. A follow-up search revealed a .32 Taurus pistol along with a magazine containing eight live rounds. Additionally, three spent shells were recovered from the roadway.

The 37-year-old construction worker from Cove and John was arrested and questioned. He too stated that he did not hold a firearm license. The firearm and ammunition were logged by the police, and the suspect remains in custody.

Authorities have confirmed that investigations into both incidents are ongoing.
