Statement from Minister of Education Sonia Parag

News

Following a recent social media post by the News Room displaying toy guns and other items found at West Ruimveldt Secondary School, I spoke with the Headmistress regarding the situation. She clarified that the school administration had organized a meeting with parents and students to address several pressing issues affecting the school environment, including bullying and the possession of prohibited items on campus.

During this meeting, the Headmistress presented various items accumulated over the years to raise awareness among parents about what their children may be bringing to school. Importantly, she confirmed that no searches were conducted at the school today, and there were no officials from the Ministry of Education or members of the Guyana Police Force involved in this initiative, which contradicts the information reported by the News Room.

I urge the News Room and other media outlets to seek clarification from the appropriate authorities when covering sensitive matters concerning our schools.

The Ministry of Education is committed to working with relevant stakeholders to ensure that our school environments remain safe and supportive for all students. I commend the Headmistress of West Ruimveldt Secondary School for her proactive approach in engaging parents on these critical issues as we collectively strive to address bullying and violence in our educational institutions.
