Mohamed was discovered unresponsive in his cell on Friday, June 26, 2026, just one day after he had been arrested and admitted to killing his wife of 26 years.

According to police reports, Mohamed had been taken to the Leonora Cottage Hospital for medical treatment on the evening of his arrest, June 25, and was returned to his cell at approximately 11:40 p.m.

The following day, at roughly 11:24 a.m., a police rank attempted to deliver a meal provided by the suspect’s son. When the rank received no response after calling out to Mohamed, they entered the cell and discovered that he had taken his own life using an article of clothing.

Mohamed’s death marks a tragic end to a case that had shocked the West Coast Demerara community. On Thursday morning, the body of 46-year-old Shavanie Hanoman was found in a canal near the couple’s home in De Groot, Uitvlugt.

Following his arrest, Mohamed had confessed to the crime, detailing a fatal argument that occurred on Wednesday night. He admitted to stabbing his wife in the chest and chin before pushing her into the canal. He had reportedly led investigators to the scene of the crime and identified the location of the murder weapon just hours before his own death.

Authorities have launched an investigation into the circumstances surrounding his death while in custody.
