Agriculture Minister Zulfikar Mustapha on Thursday met with a delegation from the Caribbean Agricultural Health and Food Safety Agency (CAHFSA), led by Chief Executive Officer Dr. Gavin Peters, as part of the Government’s efforts to deepen collaboration in agricultural health and food safety.
During the meeting, Minister Mustapha acknowledged that while Guyana has a Food Safety Authority in place, amendments are needed to the legislation governing the agency. He called on CAHFSA to work with member states to introduce modern legislative frameworks aimed at establishing and strengthening food safety authorities across the region, and underscored the broader need for CARICOM countries to develop legislation to support food security.
It was also disclosed that Guyana will host the 27th Meeting of the CARICOM Committee of Chief Veterinary Officers (CCCVO) in 2027. This year’s meeting was held in St. Eustatius and drew participation from 20 CARICOM member states.
