A Mahaicony family is calling for justice and police accountability after their 56-year-old relative was allegedly struck by an intoxicated driver on Independence Day, leaving him with severe injuries, no income, and what they describe as a deeply troubling experience at the hands of investigators.

Ramcharan Dyal of Chelsea Park, Mahaica, was involved in a collision on May 26, 2026, at approximately 6:15am while riding his motorcycle to work with his grass-cutting equipment. His daughter, Melisa Jagesar, told this publication that a motor car allegedly driven by an intoxicated man struck her father, leaving him with serious head injuries, along with injuries to his face, arms, legs, and other parts of his body. He also suffered significant blood loss, and his work equipment was badly damaged in the crash.
The incident has placed enormous financial and emotional strain on Dyal’s three-member household, which includes his wife and one of his daughters.
“He can’t work because of these injuries. He has no income, and he is the sole breadwinner in the household. His wife and daughter are caring for him around the clock — cooking, cleaning, and nursing him as best they can to aid his recovery. Even so, it could take months before he is able to fully recover, and we still don’t know how long that process will take,” Jagesar said.
Adding to the family’s distress, Jagesar alleged that the driver’s relatives have shown little concern for Dyal’s condition, made no effort to formally engage the family, and have instead attempted to portray Dyal as the intoxicated party in the crash. She said the driver’s family offered a settlement of $500,000, which her family rejected, insisting on full accountability.
“Neither the driver nor his family has called even once to ask how my father is doing. This matter is not being treated with the seriousness it deserves, considering the severity of his injuries and the reckless nature of the incident,” she stated.
The family’s frustration has been compounded by what Jagesar described as deeply troubling conduct at the Mahaicony Police Station. She alleged that an inspector attached to the Number Two Sub-Division verbally abused her injured father during a visit to the station and threatened him with detention when he struggled to answer a question.
“He told him he would lock him up because he couldn’t answer a question properly. He was shouting at him like an animal,” she alleged, adding that the officer has since refused to communicate with the family about the matter.
Jagesar also alleged that her father was made to sign a statement prepared by the inspector rather than one written in his own words. Five days after the incident, she said the family remains uncertain about the status of the investigation and is unaware of the specific charges reportedly laid against the driver.
Dissatisfied with the handling of the case, Jagesar is now appealing directly to the Commissioner of Police to intervene and ensure the matter is dealt with fairly and transparently.
“He deserves proper medical support and accountability from those responsible,” she asserted.
