TWO MOTORCYCLISTS FACE HEFTY FINES IN LETHEM COURT

Two motorcyclists appeared before the Lethem Magistrate’s Court on Monday, 4th May 2026, facing multiple traffic and safety violations committed on Sunday, 3rd May 2026, in the North Rupununi region.

BRAVIN JACOBS CASE

Bravin Jacobs, a 26-year-old male Guyanese of Amerindian ancestry, was arrested and charged for operating a motorcycle without identification marks on the Annai Trail Road, North Rupununi.

He appeared before His Worship Magistrate Mr. Omadatt Chandan, where he pleaded guilty to all charges.

The following penalties were imposed:

Unlicensed Driver – Fined $25,000 or two weeks imprisonment.

Unlicensed Motor Vehicle – Fined $10,000 or one week imprisonment.

Fail to Have Identification Mark (Rear) – Fined $30,000 or three weeks imprisonment.

Fail to Have Identification Mark (Front) – Fined $20,000 or two weeks imprisonment.

Driving Motorcycle Without Safety Helmet – Fined $5,500 or one week imprisonment.

Driving While Breath Alcohol Level Exceeded the Prescribed Limit – Fined $50,000 or five weeks imprisonment.

Uninsured Motor Vehicle – Fined $25,000 or two weeks imprisonment.

Uncertified Motor Vehicle – Fined $20,000 or two weeks imprisonment.

Jacobs’ total fines amount to $185,500, with a default sentence of eighteen weeks imprisonment if the fines are not paid.

ROY LAWRENCE CASE

Roy Lawrence, a 29-year-old male Guyanese of mixed ancestry, was arrested and charged in connection with offences committed on Tabatinga Public Road.

He appeared before His Worship Magistrate Mr. Omadatt Chandan, where he pleaded guilty to all charges except where otherwise stated.

The following penalties were imposed:

Unlicensed Driver – Fined $25,000 or two weeks imprisonment.

Breach of Insurance – Fined $25,000 or two weeks imprisonment.

Driving Motor Vehicle While Breath Alcohol Level Exceeded the Prescribed Limit – Fined $50,000 or five weeks imprisonment.

Dangerous Driving – The defendant was placed on self bail, and the matter was adjourned to 12th May 2026.

Lawrence’s total fines amount to $100,000, with a default sentence of nine weeks imprisonment if the fines are not paid.

Both cases highlight serious traffic safety violations, including unlicensed driving, impaired driving, and vehicle insurance breaches—infractions that pose significant risks to road safety in the North Rupununi region.
