Two motorists have been fined following appearances before separate magistrates’ courts on Monday on a combined total of seven traffic-related charges.

At the Bartica Magistrate’s Court, 23-year-old mechanic Mahendra Benny of Lot 19 One and a Quarter Mile, Potaro, appeared before Magistrate Teriq Mohammed and pleaded guilty to four charges. He was found to have been driving while his breath alcohol level exceeded the prescribed limit, driving dangerously, driving without a licence and breaching insurance requirements under the Motor Vehicle Insurance (Third Party Risks) Act.
Benny was fined $200,000 for the drink driving offence, $50,000 for dangerous driving, $40,000 for driving without a licence and $25,000 for the insurance breach — bringing his total fines to $315,000, with three months’ imprisonment imposed in default of payment.
In a separate matter at the Friendship Magistrate’s Court, East Bank Demerara, Travis Noel of Lot 235 Herstelling, East Bank Demerara, appeared before Magistrate Tamica Clarke on charges laid by Constable Quamina of the Madewini Police Outpost. Noel initially pleaded not guilty to failing to carry a front identification mark, failing to carry a rear identification mark and failing to produce a driver’s licence. However, following the presentation of evidence by the constable, he was found guilty on all three counts.
He was fined $150,000 for each of the identification mark offences, with three months’ imprisonment in default of each, and $20,000 for failing to produce his driver’s licence, with three weeks’ imprisonment in default.
